“Early alert” has its roots in faculty feedback forms but has grown into a comprehensive technology tool. We define early alert as a program or initiative designed to identify and support students at academic risk; provide intrusive and individualized interventions to students in need; and provide formal, proactive, feedback through which students and student-support agents are alerted to early “red flags.” While the definition may be complex, the technology system we built to support early alert is simple.
